Thanks for the comment...You're someone we've followed for a bit, so you bring an interesting perspective...you have personality. Which means that you're more interesting and engaging.

I mention that because it will be challenging for banks -- especially the big ones -- to keep that "local" flavor while still being beholden to the big brand. WaMu did it so well (the customer service thing; the banking thing may have been a little suspect). It would be nice to see Chase learn from what WaMu had down pat.

Banks are just one of a multitude of businesses that have a long way to go with making use of social media... as a matter of fact, it seems that for now, the entertainment industry (in particular restaurants and bars) are the biggest users of social media. I strongly believe that other service industries (like banks and, yes, dentists) will benefit from social media in just exactly the ways that you gave as examples....getting on four square so that people "check in" each time they visit, get Twitter accounts to engage with their community and talk about their promotions, get a Facebook Fan Page....and the most important task as they eventually DO take on social media is to engage. Listen to what their community is saying. Respond. Use social media to bring us back to an era when we cared. When customer service meant something and when people listened.
